From the Principal

The weeks are flying by, with a lot of things on as we approach the end of term 1. Keep an eye on our Facebook, website and emails.
This year we have 2 priority areas: -
Priority 1. Enhancing educational achievement in Literacy through high quality instruction
Priority 2. Enhancing wellbeing and engagement through high quality partnerships and social emotional learning program
Priority 1 - Reading
Our staff have been involved in a lot of professional development lead by our leadership team around structured literacy and the teaching of reading, this ensures our students are getting the very best in their education.
We do not have homework at Thangool, instead we ask our families to support their child with nightly reading. Reading is a critical life skill and nightly practise of skills taught at school support your child to becoming a confident and capable reader.
If a child does not complete their nightly reading in the first 10mins of play they will be supported by staff and library monitors to do their daily reading practise.

Priority 2 - Engagement & Attendance

Staff have also participated in numerous professional development sessions around engagement in the classroom, emotional intelligence, visible learning and behaviour management supporting our SEL mission statement-To support social emotional capability, developing reflective learners to lead a fulfilling life.
In week 9, Thursday 27 March 6:30pm we are holding a parent workshop on our school’s SEL program. I strongly encourage you to attend so you know how our programs work and the process for our small groups in years 4-6.
Have an awesome week everyone!
Fiona
NAPLAN

NAPLAN testing will be held in week 7 & week 8 for students in year 3 and year 5. The testing will start with the Writing task on Wednesday 12 March. Year 3 will complete their writing task by hand while the Year 5 crew complete their writing task on the computer. Writing is followed by Reading, Conventions of Language (ie Spelling + Grammar and Punctuation), Reading and Numeracy. If students are absent for any of the tests, they have the opportunity to complete the missed task/s by Friday 21 March. For further information about NAPLAN 2025 please head to www.nap.edu.au/naplan.
Leadership Camp

Leadership Camp- Our year 6 students head off for two days-Thursday and Friday to Pelican Point to participate in activities to support them grow as leaders and team players. A big thank you to Miss Sammi Jo Hyland, Miss Charmaine Symes and Mrs Genevieve Gleeson for their time and effort in organising and participating in camp, offering our students an invaluable experience.
Attendance

Our current attendance is 92.4%. Our school target for attendance is 94%. It is extra important that students are at school every day (unless unwell) so that they can participate in the teaching and learning that happens every day. Attendance also plays a crucial role in friendship and social and emotional development.
Remember, EVERY DAY COUNTS!
P&C News

The AGM followed by a general meeting will be held on Monday 24 March @ 5pm.
The P&C is a wonderful support to our school and we would love to see many returning or welcome new parents to come along.
School Mission Statement/Capable Learner
Our school mission statement forms the basis of all decisions made by the school. Our first question in all we do is always “what impact does this have on our students?”

SEL News - It's Your Move

Social and Emotional Learning at Thangool SS
It has been a big start to the year at Thangool State School, with our students diving into Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) through gratitude journals, dedicated SEL lessons, and preparations for our upcoming Year 6 Leadership Camp.
Gratitude in Action Our gratitude journals have been a wonderful addition to our SEL program, helping students reflect on the positives in their daily lives. Research shows that practicing gratitude can lead to improved mental well-being, increased resilience, and stronger relationships. Thank you to all the parents and caregivers who have been engaging in conversations about gratitude at home. Your support reinforces these valuable lessons and helps build a strong connection between home and school.
Year 6 Leadership Camp Excitement is building for our Year 6 Leadership Camp! This experience will challenge our students to step outside their comfort zones, develop leadership skills, and strengthen teamwork. The camp is an important milestone in their journey, preparing them to be positive role models for younger students.
Working Together for Well-being The partnership between families and schools is key to fostering emotional intelligence in our students. Studies indicate that when gratitude and emotional skills are reinforced at home, children experience greater happiness, improved friendships, and better problem-solving abilities. We appreciate your continued support in helping our students develop a mindset of gratitude and resilience.
Thank you for working with us to create a positive and supportive environment for all students at Thangool State School. Together, we are shaping confident, caring, and capable young people!
Sammi Jo Hyland

TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Thangool State School offers parents/carers the opportunity to discuss your child’s educational performance with their teacher(s) during Week 9 of Term 1 and Term 3. Parents/carers are able to make an interview time through the electronic booking system (SOBS). These interviews provide a snapshot of your child’s progress and are only short in duration. If you would like to have a longer meeting, please contact your child’s teacher to arrange a mutually agreed time. Interviews will begin in the afternoon, while students are supervised by the Principal and specialist staff. We use a consistent Parent-Teacher Interview template to record student data and conversations. These interview forms are only provided to families who have attended an interview. Following the interview, this document is uploaded to your child’s school record.
ASSEMBLY
At the end of each term, whole school assemblies are held. After performing the Acknowledgement to Country, National Anthem and School Prayer, each class shares a brief snapshot of their learning. Special awards and honours are presented at the whole school assembly. The presence of parents and community members at the weekly parade and end of term assemblies is encouraged.
Sports News

Please find below our Interhouse Sports Carnival dates for 2025. At this stage, the Swimming Carnival date needs to be confirmed.
Thank you to our families for following our Port Curtis Representative Sport Procedure. Students can express their interest in trialling by collecting an expression of interest form from Mrs White in the library.
I will be speaking to the Year 5 and 6 students about the Touch Gala Day coming up on Wednesday 2nd April later this week.
I would like to remind all students to bring their water bottle and hat to PE lessons.
