Term 2 Week 2 Newsletter 1st May 2025
From the Principal

Welcome back to Term 2 at Thangool State School! We hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable break. We've already had a strong start, with students taking part in our ANZAC services, enjoying the obstacle course, and learning from Amy Gomes, paramedic.
We are excited for the busy and rewarding term ahead, filled with new learning opportunities, special events, and plenty of chances to connect and grow together. We look forward to seeing our students continue to work hard, have a go, and enjoy a wonderful term ahead.
Attendance

At Thangool State School, we know that regular attendance is vital for every student's success. Every day at school builds skills, friendships, and confidence. Our attendance target for 2025 is 94%, and we are currently sitting at 86.6%. We need everyone's help to achieve our goal of 94%. Missing even one or two days can make it harder for students to keep up with their learning.

ANZAC Service

Our school proudly came together last week to honour ANZAC Day, with a special service led by our Year One students and Miss Black. Congratulations to them for delivering such a respectful and meaningful tribute, reminding us all of the bravery, sacrifice, and enduring spirit of our servicemen and women. We also extend a sincere thank you to all students, parents, and staff who attended community ANZAC services — your support highlights the importance of remembering those who have served and ensuring their legacy lives on in future generations.

Welcome Back

A big welcome back to Mrs Leanne Lawson, who returns to us in Term 2. Mrs Lawson will be teaching HASS to our Prep to Year 3 students and teaching our Year 2 class on Fridays. We are thrilled to have her back and look forward to all the wonderful learning ahead! Welcome back, Mrs Lawson.

It's Your Move - Impact Coach

Welcome to Term 2! I am excited to continue our journey in supporting our students' social and emotional development.
This term, we are excited to roll out a variety of SEL initiatives including continuing our gratitude diaries, focused lessons on key social and emotional skills, and parent workshops to provide valuable tools and strategies at home.
We will also be welcoming our ‘It’s Your Move’ focussed groups, which include:
- Year 6 Girls’ Group,
- Year 6 Boys’ Group,
- Year 5/6 Mixed Impact Program,
- Year 2 Friendship Program,
- Year 6 Leaders and Wellbeing Officers Lessons,
- Year 4 Whole Class Program.
Learning about the Brain
A special highlight this term is our whole-school focus on understanding the brain and its role in emotional regulation. Each week, all students will learn about a different part of the brain and the strategies that help us manage our emotions. From breathing exercises to gratitude practices, these lessons will equip our students with the tools they need to regulate their feelings and build resilience. This week, our students will begin by learning about the Amygdala—often referred to as the “guard dog” of the brain—helping them understand how emotions work and how they can take control.
I encourage you to ask your child each week about what they are learning in SEL lessons. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with them and reinforce the importance of emotional awareness and regulation at home.
Here’s to a wonderful Term 2, full of learning, growth, and connection!
Parent workshop
We are also pleased to offer parents an opportunity to attend a workshop on supporting your child with friendships. Save the date: Thursday, 29th May—see the flyer attached!
We look forward to seeing you there.

HOC News

ANZAC Day
Congratulations to the Year 1 students, Miss Black and the Teacher-aides who organised and conducted our school service. Thank you to the families who participated in the Biloela and/or Thangool services and congratulations to all the students. It was noted by a war veteran that our students were very respectful during the ceremony, listening quietly, standing solemnly, laying wreaths thoughtfully, and reflecting silently during the minute of remembrance. Well done.
Curriculum
In English this term, our students are exploring informative texts, which are crucial for developing their reading and writing skills. From Prep to Year 6, we are guiding students through the structure and features of different types of informative texts, including reports, instructions, and fact-based articles. In the early years, the students will focus on identifying key details, while older students will practice writing their own informative pieces. This process will assist students develop a deeper understanding of how to present factual information clearly and effectively. We encourage you to support your child by discussing informative texts at home.
This term in Mathematics, students from Prep to Year 6 will be exploring the mathematical concepts of measurement and space in everyday life, counting & patterns, problem-solving, investigating and reflecting on learning and applying knowledge in different contexts.
Reading
Reading to or with your child every night is one of the most powerful ways to support their learning and development. It builds vocabulary, strengthens comprehension skills, and fosters a lifelong love of reading. 10–15 minutes a night can make a big difference. Sharing stories creates special moments, sparks imagination, and helps children develop empathy and understanding. It also improves their ability to focus and listen, which are key skills for success in school and beyond. Thank you for continuing our mission to improve your child’s reading by completing the reading log book and returning it each and every day.
Biloela Show
Keep an eye out in the pavilion for the school display and the Prep display in the Early Childhood corner.

The P-3 students will need to wear old, sun safe clothing as the activities can get messy. Although the community events conclude at 11am, the P-3 students will continue to participate in a variety of different activities throughout the day.
This day will also be our Term 2, transition morning for our 2026 cohort and our monthly playgroup morning catch-up. The program for the day:
