Term 2 Week 8 Newsletter 8 June 2022
From the Principal's Desk
Winter weather is here in time for our sports day!. Please ensure your children have names on their jumpers/jackets and that the winter items are black in colour – NO HOODS!
Our Year 4-6 students thoroughly enjoyed their Bright Future STEM program last Thursday morning. The activities were very interactive – remote control mine machinery, virtual reality glasses, programming to name a few of the activities.
Our teachers this afternoon will be involved in moderating completed assessment tasks. This process ensures that what results have been given have been demonstrated by the student in the task in line with the purpose and marking guide of the task. Conversations are always rigorous, and all moderators take away some new learning about their teaching and learning journeys for their next unit of work.
Interschool Athletics
Thursday and Friday brings us to our annual athletics carnival – a day where all students get to show off their running, jumping, throwing skills. For our 10-12 year olds it is also a day of doing their best so that they can be selected to represent our school at the Dawson Valley Athletics Carnival. For our 9 year olds, it is a chance to experience the more competitive side of being an athlete before selection trials as 10- 12 year olds.
For our juniors, the day is about having fun, participating in activities that are the precursor to the ‘real’ athletic events in later years. All students are encouraged to participate in events as this earns a point per event entered in for their House team. Fingers crossed for great weather. Parents/caregivers are welcome to attend.
Any helpers/volunteers will need to show proof of vaccination. Yes, this seems hypocritical but these are the guidelines for our schools as outlined by the Health Department and then Department of Education.
NO POKEMON OR SIMILAR CARDS OR TOYS AT SCHOOL
Our school expectation is that ALL toys and cards such as Pokemon cards stay at home. The only reason a toy or precious thing comes to school is if it is for a Show n Share session that has been organised with the class teacher. Staff cannot be responsible for the loss, theft, damage to items brought to school. It also causes many friendship issues. Your support with this expectation is much appreciated.
Sport's News
Just a reminder that students competing in the 10-12 years age groups who finish 1,2,3 or 4 are eligible to compete at the Callide Valley Interschool Athletics Carnival at Redeemer Lutheran College on Friday 17th June 2022. If your child does NOT want to compete in an event, please notify Mrs Nancarrow by Monday 13th June 2022 at the latest.
The Callide Valley Interschool Athletics Carnival is currently looking for Sponsorship for the next five years. If you know of a business that would be interested in having the naming rights for this carnival and the associated trophies, please let Mrs Nancarrow know.

From our HOC
Phonological awareness is the ability to focus on the sounds of speech. It encompasses an awareness of rhythm, rhyme, sounds and syllables. Developing an understanding of these skills demonstrates early phonemic awareness, which is the most important subset of phonological awareness in the development of reading and spelling. It enables children to identify and focus on the separate sounds in words: phonemes and the skills to manipulate those sounds to form new words. Phonological awareness is the ability to identify sounds and sound patterns of language. It is the ability to manipulate sounds and parts or words. Phonemic awareness is systematically planned for and taught explicitly within curriculum learning areas. Phonemes are the smallest unit of sound in speech and phonemic awareness is the ability to identify those individual sounds in spoken words. Phonemic awareness assists beginner readers to understand that written words are made up of graphemes (letters) that correspond to phonemes (sounds). This is called the alphabetic principle.
From the Guidance Officer
From the Guido:
A good and healthy life requires good health. It is not just physical health that is important, but mental health too. Each of the two influences the other: if we have good physical health, we are more likely to approach things in a positive manner, and if we have good mental health, we are more likely to tackle the challenges, both physical and mental, that each day provides.
Men’s Health Week runs from 13th – 19th June, with the theme “Building Healthy Environments for Men and Boys.” Sometimes barriers get in the way, and stop us from seeking the support we need, and it seems that males are particularly prone to these barriers. Maybe we recognise these barriers ourselves; maybe we notice that a member of the family, work colleague, friend or loved one is suffering, and may be unable to break the barrier down.
Five factors that typically prevent men from seeking support or information are:
- Hoping it’s not an issue (denial)
- Taking too long to do something about one’s health (delayed information seeking)
- Worried that asking for help is perceived as being weak (social construct of masculinity)
- Having trouble talking about one’s health (feeling nervous or embarrassed)
- Not sure what information to trust (figuring out what source to trust)
These five factors, how to deal with them and other information, can be found on the following website: https://www.healthymale.org.au/mens-health-week-2022
I am at Thangool State School every second Friday, and have changed from even weeks to odd weeks commencing 20th May. I can be contacted by calling the school on 4990 0333, if there is anything you would like to talk about regarding how to support your child.
