As the Term concludes we reflect on all the great achievements for this year thus far:
- Great learning in every classroom, every day, and outside of the classroom with Excursions, Extended Learning, camp and Visits.
- Rate of student progress in Key Learning Areas and numbers of students showing high performance in these areas is positive.
- Several students selected in Thangool, Port Curtis, and Capricornia Teams.
- Fantastic community events like Athletics Carnivals, Under 8’s day, mid semester parent teacher interviews, playgroup.
- Facilities upgrades in prep, year 1 & 2 classrooms, front of school, cubby house play area and tennis courts.
Thanks to every member of the Thangool community for their part in what has been a very successful semester 1.
I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable two weeks throughout the school holidays, and we look forward to seeing our students return on Monday 11th July.
Have a wonderful break.

Sports
What a wonderful term of sports. Our school sports day was 2 of the coldest days this term but our spectators were out in force, thank you parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles, friends for coming out to support our students.
A big thank you to Jodie & Rob Goodger for being officials on the day and all the parents who offered assistance at different events.
A huge thank you to our wonderful P&C for providing tuckshop on the Friday to feed us all.
A big thank you to our hard working PE teacher Mrs Nancarrow who not only organised our own sports day but has established a Callide sport committee with a representative from every local primary & high school.
To our wonderful staff who always give of themselves and ensured a smooth running 2 days of events.
Finally thank you to our awesome students who participated to their very best, showed outstanding sportsmanship and behaviour and were a credit to themselves, parents and school.
Rapid Antigen Test Kits
Thank you to our parents and community members for their support throughout the year, as we manage the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 and the changing requirements for isolation and quarantine. To support this we have been able to provide RAT kits to staff and students who became symptomatic at school. However, as our supplies become exhausted, they will not be replaced. This is in line with the ‘COVID normal’ phase of management that schools are now in.
We are aware that many of our families have already transitioned to accessing their own kits, but wanted to ensure that everyone is aware that schools will eventually no longer have RAT kits for distribution.
School Opinion Survey
The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted 18th July to 12th August 2022. All families, school staff and students in target year levels will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve. The Department of Education will commence sending email invitations to participants in the first week of term 3.
Keep an eye out for your School Opinion Survey
Report Cards
After a very busy semester, report cards were emailed home on Wednesday. Thank you to our teachers for all the hard work that goes into report card time. If you have any questions about your child’s report card please contact your child’s teacher in the first instance.
From our HOC
This year we are conducting a cycle of inquiry focussing on using the latest research in the teaching of reading. We are participating in professional learning, using student data and reflecting on our teaching practices to ensure we are delivering a high-quality reading program that positively impacts student reading outcomes.
Research states that ‘setting a goal’ has a high impact on student learning. To ensure that students are successful readers, each student needs to have clarity in regards to their next steps and having a goal identifies what success looks like. Having a reading goal will explain to the students what they need to understand and/or what they need to do.
To support students in understanding their next steps to be a capable reader we are introducing across the school, ‘Reading Bookmarks’. Beginning next term, these bookmarks will be provided to each student (via their homework reading.) These bookmarks will be individually tailored to support the specific needs of your child. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with these bookmarks and at homework time, you and your child will have an explicit focus when engaging with texts. If you require further information in regards to the bookmarks or would like some tips to support your child achieve their goal, please contact your child’s teacher.
From the Guidance Officer
From the Guido:
After such a disruptive start to the year, it is great to see that things are generally more settled and we have managed to arrive at the end of the first semester. I know that teachers, teacher aides, parents and others have all been working very hard dealing with the continued disruptions that COVID has brought, and helping our young people to engage and achieve as best they can. I am sure we have not yet seen the last of COVID disruptions, so it is very important that we do take time in the upcoming holidays to attend to our own needs. The holiday period is a great time to relax, reset and reengage with friends and family.
Look after your mental health as much as your physical health, and if you notice someone close to you seems to be struggling, spend some time with them, have a cuppa, do something together that you both enjoy. That may be just the thing that you or they need!
Remember, you can always ring any of the helplines that appear below, as well as see your family doctor (GP) and discuss a mental health plan, if you have any concerns.
I am at Thangool State School every second Friday (odd weeks of the term). I can be contacted by calling the school on 4990 0333, if there is anything you would like to talk about regarding how to support your child. In the meantime, have a wonderful break from the usual routine, and see you in semester 2!

Last Friday, 40 students from Thangool School attended the Callide Valley Interschool Athletics Carnival at Redeemer Lutheran College. Congratulations to Thangool School on winning both the overall points trophy and the average aggregate points trophy. From this carnival, 19 students were selected to attend the Port Curtis trials in Gladstone. These trials will take place during Week 3 (Tuesday and Wednesday) in Term 3. Students would have received a letter from Mrs Nancarrow advising them of the events that they were selected in and the necessary forms for the trials. All paperwork must be taken to the trials by the student, do not return this paperwork to school.
At Thangool, we are always seeking ways to improve and we are currently seeking feedback on our Interhouse Athletics Carnival (held at Thangool) and the Callide Valley Athletics Interschool Carnival (held at Redeemer). Please see below the two links to the surveys.
