The next few weeks continue to be busy with sporting events-Cap trials, tennis, interschool cricket and netball, cyber safety talks, project club day, book week and bookfair, prep interviews and transitions, CQU Robotics Cup and speaking competition.
Have a wonderful week.

School Review
School Review
Our school review was conducted in week 4 and for 3 days we had 3 reviewers in our school;
- Mr Scott Medford-Review Chair
- Peer Reviewer – Darren Sengstock
- External Reviewer – Lesley Vogan
Reviewers look closely at each school’s performance data and speak with a wide range of staff, students, parents and community members to get an accurate picture of the school. Our written report will be back in 10 days but the feedback we received has made us all immensely proud. Our school was identified as having exceptional practices, honouring traditions, great balance between wellbeing and academic and a positive culture with a warm, welcoming feel. Thank you to everyone!
Children's Safety First
Our student's safety is of utmost importance here at Thangool State School. We are constantly discussing with all our students’ ways to keep safe in and around the school. Stranger Danger is one of those topics we visit regularly. It requires vigilance and must always be something we are prepared for. Please take the time to discuss this issue with your children to make sure they are aware how important it is for them to stay safe.
We have been very fortunate to have Sergeant Kristy Curtis here over the last few weeks talking with each class group about Cyber Safety. Lots of discussion and questioning has occurred from these talks with raised awareness.
Cold and Flu (and COVID)
If the last 12 months have taught us anything, it is that as a community we tend to be a bit “flexible” with our approach to sickness - it has been a lesson well learned - that if we are unwell we should rest. As we get further into winter, cold and flu will happen. Parents are asked to remember the current protocols in place for children - if children present as unwell/ sick we will call home and ask for them to be picked up. This is standard practice in schools and is a great strategy to reduce spread. With COVID prevalent in the community, please monitor your family symptoms. If you, your child or a household member tests positive to COVID, please follow Queensland Health guidelines for reporting the test result, isolation and close contacts. For more information about Queensland’s response to COVID, visit www.covid19.qld.gov.au
Project Club Day/Book Week
Next week is a big week on our school calendar. Project club day on the Monday. Children bring in items for the different events on Monday morning. The afternoon will see our auction of items donated by our students-cooking, flowers, produce (thank you to our families for donating back as the funds raised from our auction go towards our project club to purchase items that benefit all children).
Our book week will see a bookfair all week where students can purchase items from and with dress up day on Thursday-come as your favourite book character.
Student Free Day
Reminder that Friday 2nd September is a student free day. All staff will be involved in visible learning professional development on this day.
P&C News
Our next P&C meeting is on Thursday 8 September 5:30pm at Red Steer. Order dinner on arrival. This is a great opportunity to hear all the wonderful things happening in our school and also be involved in supporting activities that impact your children.
P&C currently have a raffle for Father’s Day. Tickets are online and we would greatly appreciate your support in selling as many as we can far and wide to friends and family.
Father's Day Stall
As our Mother’s Day stall was such a success the P&C are again holding a Father’s Day stall for students to purchase gifts for their dads or special someone. Before school on Tuesday 30 or Wednesday 31 students can bring cash to purchase a gift ranging from $2-$12.
Enrolments
We are currently taking enrolments for 2023 so if you know of anyone wishing to enrol please ask them to contact our office.
For our HOC
Vocabulary
Students need to be continually expanding the range of words that they can understand and use in context. Vocabulary is learned through repeated exposure to new words in conversations, by listening to stories, by reading, and through different media. (Senechal, 1997). Exposure to words in meaningful contexts helps to make meanings clear and students supports students to use new vocabulary confidently in new contexts. The explicit teaching of vocabulary is essential when learning to read.
Some games and activities that you can play with your child:
Word Games
Commercially made games are great for vocabulary development, play and practice. Games such as Balderdash, Taboo, Scrabble, Blurt, Bananagrams and word bingo.
Celebrity Heads - Vocabulary Game
Your child holds a word on a card in front of their foreheads. They don’t know what words they have. Your child asks each other a series of questions to determine the meaning of their word or they can give clues to the person with the word to help that person guess the word.
Word Pairs
Give students words in pairs and have them evaluate if the words are the same, opposite, go together, or are unrelated. This strategy is terrific for building critical thinking skills along with the vocabulary.
