Term 4 Week 4 Newsletter 26 October 2022
From our Principal
Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Queensland Principal’s Conference and Business Day in Brisbane. The Director-General of Education Mr Michael De’Ath, provided principals with the opportunity to consult and provide feedback regarding the proposed new strategic plan for education. Moving forward our department is committing to Equity and Excellence with many new initiatives to be introduced. I look forward to sharing more information with the community as it comes to hand.
The last 6 weeks will go very quickly. We have lots of events and activities on over the remainder of the term so please ensure you keep an eye on our Facebook, newsletters and emails.
Have a wonderful week.
Fiona
Attendance
Thank you for supporting us with attendance and making every day count. It is great having all our students back in classrooms and doing their very best learning.
Planning for 2023
We are busy planning enrolments, facilities, resources and staffing for the 2023 school year. If you know you will not be with us next year could you let us know so we can factor this in our planning. If you know anyone considering Thangool for their child please get them to contact our office as all our staffing is based on day 8 numbers.
Feedback regarding Homework and SEL program
This term we trialled no homework based on evidence and before we make a decision for 2023 we would like your feedback. We also introduced SEL with our year 4-6 students and would love your feedback so we can refine and improve this program. Please return feedback via email to fbyrn1@eq.edu.au or print and return to office. We will also be seeking feedback about these programs at our next P&C meeting so please come along so we can hear your thoughts.
World Teachers' Day
Today our teacher aides put on a beautiful luncheon to celebrate and recognise our wonderful teaching staff. Each and every day our teachers do the extra things that make a difference in the lives of students, families and school, so this Friday on World Teachers’ Day I want to stay thank you! We are very fortunate to have hard working, caring and professional teachers who strive every day to provide a quality education for our students. We value all you do and thank you for making a difference and having a positive impact on our children’s lives.
Day for Daniel
Friday is also Day for Daniel. Students are encouraged to wear red to raise awareness on the importance of child safety. On Friday children will be engaged in discussions and reminders and we encourage parents to also take this opportunity to touch base with their child around ways to stay safe.
Damien Kee
Next Thursday and Friday we have Damien Kee here working with our students and staff to build their capability with technology. This builds on the work Mrs Burnham has been doing the our robotics teams as well as in different classrooms this term.
Reminders
With the weather warming up please remember it is an expectation that children wear a hat (wide brimmed, no caps). Also, it is strongly recommended for children to continue to bring water bottles.
Sports News
Our School Swimming Carnival will be held on Friday 18th November 2022. The theme for this year's carnival is Embrace Challenge and we are asking each student to ask themselves "What is their win?". The Moore Australia Swimming Carnival will be held on Wednesday 23rd November 2022. Your child/ren will be bringing home their nomination forms for the Swimming Carnival over the next few days. We hold participation events as well as competition events. Our participation events will have an adult in every lane to support and encourage each participant. Students can nominate to swim in Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly and may choose either 25m or 50m but not both. However, students who are born in 2010, 2011 and 2012 must compete in 50m events to be eligible for the Moore Australia Carnival. Students born in these age groups may also nominate to swim 100m Freestyle. Nomination forms for this Carnival will be handed out at the conclusion of our Carnival. If you have any concerns please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Nancarrow ( enanc4@eq.edu.au )
From the HOC - Head of Curriculum
You may have noticed, Thangool State School’s increase use of hexagons on our documents, Facebook page and website. We have decided to introduce hexagons as a symbol for our school.
The use of the hexagon for our school is based on our proximity to Mount Scoria, it’s basalt columns and Mount Scoria’s importance as a natural wonder and an indigenous Gangulu site.
Mount Scoria is unique to Australia. Approximately 20 million years ago, Mount Soria erupted and once the lava had cooled, it formed hexagonal basalt columns, which when struck play magnificent musical notes. For this to happen, the conditions had to be suitable so that the lava cooled at a consistent temperature over time. If this did not occur, irregular 5 or 7 sided columns with unpleasant sounds would have been formed.
Similar to the spectacular columns at Mount Scoria, the hexagon for our school symbolises consistency and excellence. Our school’s philosophy is founded on our high expectations, collaboration, strong relationships, our knowledge of curriculum and effective pedagogy, evidence-based practices, our culture and traditions. These foundations have been developed and refined over time to make Thangool State School a prominent and leading school throughout the Central Queensland Region, Queensland and Australia.

Colour Run
Our Project Club is holding a Colour Run Fundraiser on Friday 11th November from 1.30pm. This is a family event, so we welcome parents to come and join in the fun. Our day will start with a Pizza Party at 1.00pm followed by a Colour Crazy Scavenger Hunt. Students can order Pizza Meal Deal (from Dominoes) for $6.00. This will give them 4 slices of Pizza and a Zooper Dooper to finish the day. Pizza Orders will open next week via the QKr app. Please watch email and Facebook for details. Our highest fundraising class will get extra colour added by our teaching staff. Students may choose to wear a white shirt on this day (there will be no slime this year - only coloured powder). P&C News
Can you help our P&C?
Thangool Hotel and Red Steer Hotel kindly donate their empty aluminium cans to our P&C as a fundraiser. We require some parents who can volunteer their time to collect the cans from each business (ute or car and trailer) and take the cans to the Containers for Change site. Ideally, we would like some parents who could offer to do this on a fortnightly basis so the amount of cans is manageable. If you can assist our P&C please add your name to the sign-up zone link
