Term 1 Week 6 Newsletter 1 March 2023
From our Principal
Goodness, another week of teaching and learning has flown by! Routines are nailed. Learning is happening. I am very proud of our students – your children – and staff for their efforts and ‘I can’ attitudes. We are already half way through the first term!
School photo’s today-exciting this year to have Ali Cat as our school photographers. We thank them for their professional and enthusiastic approach to our school photos for 2023.
We also welcome Mrs Carmel Davis to our school one day a week on a Wednesday. Carmel will be supporting Ros and Helen in the administration role at our school. I know she will be made very welcome in our school community.
Today the Assistant Regional Director Mr Peter Tanzer visited our school to see the amazing work our staff and students are involved in. It is always wonderful to share the wonderful educational opportunities our school is providing to our students.
Have an awesome week.
Fiona
Mission Statement/Capable Learner
Our school mission statement forms the basis of all decisions made by the school. Our first question in all we do is always “what impact does this have on our students?”
Feedback- We provide feedback using the words Good, better and how? I encourage you to use this of an afternoon with your child when asking about their day. What was good about the day? What could have been better? How can you make that happen? This is a great way to focus on the good things in the day, hear about the challenges but also to support your child in having an action for how to address it.
Mud Pit
Our mud pit is operational in terms 1 & 4. Please see table below for which week your child’s classes turn is. Students can come dressed in mud pit clothes with school uniform and towel in school bag. Students wearing mud pit clothes is parental permission for children to participate.
From our HOC - Reading
This year we are continuing our cycle of inquiry focussing on using the latest research in the teaching of reading for students in Years 3—6.
We are participating in professional learning, using student data and reflecting on our teaching practices to ensure we are delivering a high-quality reading program that positively impacts student reading outcomes. Our P-2 reading program has been quality assured by our school’s speech pathologist.
To support students at home, research states that ‘setting a goal’ has a high impact on student learning. To ensure that students are successful readers, each student needs to have clarity in regards to their next steps and having a goal identifies what success looks like. Having a reading goal will explain to the students what they need to understand and/or what they need to do.
Students should have already brought home their reading goal. It could be in the form of a book mark or information sheet. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with these goals and at homework time, you and your child will have an explicit focus when engaging with texts. If you require further information in regards to the bookmarks or would like some tips to support your child achieve their goal, please contact your child’s teacher.
From our Impact Coach - Visible Learning
In 2020 we began a 3-year project exploring Visible Learning with Corwin. Throughout this project the staff at Thangool have taken part in professional development involving the attributes of visible learners, the development of effective learning intentions and success criteria, the instructional feedback model, designing learning experiences to maximise student learning and high impact teaching strategies.
As a result of our time in this project we have developed our Capable Learner Framework and worked collaboratively to identify the dispositions that we feel our students need to be successful in learning and in life. Teachers and students have worked together to co-construct learning walls that make the learning happening in the classroom visible to all and a shared language around teaching and learning has been developed.
As a staff we are excited to see where our Visible Learning journey takes us beyond this project and most importantly the impact that is has on our students learning each and every day.

SEL Program News - Leadership Camp
Our Year 6 students attended Leadership Camp at Pelican Point last week. The canoeing conditions were challenging and students had to work hard as a team to paddle against the wind and waves to reach their campsite. Their persistence was certainly tested as they embraced challenge on the choppy water. It was great to see them dig deep and enjoy the challenge. Ms Symes also soaked up the atmosphere by testing the waters when her canoe tipped her out. The class completed many challenges over the two days such as pipeline, trust runs and trust falls. The second day of the camp started with a buzz as the class participated in a dance off. It was Boy’s vs Girls and with Mrs Byrne, Ms Symes, Miss Hyland and Blake as the judges it was a close contest. The boys took out the dance off in the last round and it was certainly a highlight of camp. No doubt this footage will make an appearance at the end of the year. It was a great camp where students were challenged to work as a team and it was great to see the cohort step up to the challenges. Thank you to all of the students and parents for supporting this event. A special thank you to Ms Symes and Mrs Byrne for attending the camp and supporting Miss Hyland to make the two days a success.
