Term 1 Week 4 Newsletter 16 February 2022
From the Principal's Desk
I am very proud of the commitment our teachers are giving to the teaching and learning process. They are seeing rewarding results of their day to day teaching and the many extra hours of preparation. Their commitment to ensuring the very best learning opportunities as well as giving a sense normality to our students with structure and routines has been very much appreciated. It may be only the 2nd week of students being back but teachers have developed a clear understanding of their students – their strengths and areas for improvement, their unique individual behaviours, their likes/ dislikes and so on. Class teachers specially value the support given to their classroom teaching and learning processes by our wonderful teacher aides and support teachers. The education of our community’s children is very much a team effort!
Our students are also showing great commitment to their learning as they settle back in. The warm weather certainly zaps some energy and the extended holiday break has made settling into routines such as going to the toilet and eating at set times one to get back into!
This year we have 3 focus areas: -
- Improving Reading-Improving the teaching and learning in Reading
- Visible Learning-continuing our work around capable learners
- 4D-Behaviour-classrooms having curriculum focussed conversations
Each of these areas will be through the lens of:
- Teaching with Impact
- Engaging Learners
- Strong Partnerships
I would like to thank the students, parents and staff for a wonderfully smooth start to the year. We are ready and rearing for a great year.
School Mission Statement/Capable Learner
This week we have been looking at the disposition of diligence. Our students see and say the word diligence in our school prayer every Monday on parade. Being diligent means: - trying your best, working hard and completing tasks.
Diligence is perhaps best seen when children follow through completely with chores or their schoolwork.
Playtimes/Outdoor Classroom
Playtimes are a special time at school. The staff are working hard to ensure playtime is not only fun but also enables students the chance to make choices as well as practise a lot of the social interactions that are often very difficult for our young people. The playground is a great chance for them to practice communication skills when things are not going right for them in a safe and supportive environment.
Playground options: -
Kids Shed-a place students can go with a variety of activities and a teacher they can talk to if having any friendship problems.
Oval Play-open area for students to play soccer, cricket, tag, any running game.
Playground-cubby house area, water play, obstacle course, forts, mudpit, sandpit and a variety of different games changed each week.
Tennis Court-multi-purpose use-tennis, basketball, netball, handball, dodge ball, tag.
Possum Place-Under cover area, handball, table tennis, chess, great if wanting a shaded area.
Library- place for quiet reading.
Greenhouse-gardening
Playtime Fun
Uniform Policy
The start of the year is a good time to remind everyone of our uniform policy. Attached is our school dress code. Teachers have been reminding students about hats (should be bucket hat), socks-should be plain (please leave long patterned socks for special days), jewellery-watch, medical bracelet, sleepers or studs, long hair tied back.
Thank you for supporting us in ensuring our students are wearing the correct uniform.
Back to School Plan
The guidelines we have in place will remain current until Friday 4th March. I really appreciate the way our parents and community are adhering to these, despite the fact that we would all prefer to be operating “normally” as we would in other years. Fingers crossed, we will have a return to less restrictive measures when we are advised by the Department of Education.
Year 6 Badge Ceremony
Our year 6 Badge ceremony will take place on Monday 7 March at 9am. Everyone welcome.
Should restrictions be extended we will still hold our badge ceremony on this date so our year 6 students have received their badges but we will hold a follow up celebration for parents-details will follow should this need to occur.
School Photos
Our school photos are booked for 17 March. More details closer to the date.
NAPLAN 2022
For students in year 3 & 5 NAPLAN dates are 1110-20 May 2021. This year our school will again be doing NAPLAN online.
P&C AGM Meeting
Our first meeting & AGM for the year will be on Monday 14 March 6:30pm in the library. We encourage you to attend our P&C meetings as this is a great way to meet people, learn what is happening in your child’s school, share ideas and be part of the decision-making process. Attending meetings does not mean you have to take on a position. Please come and be part of this wonderful and vital group in our school.
Have an awesome week everyone!

From our Chappy
Welcome to 2022! The school year has started off a little differently to normal but I hope that you are all settling back into your school routines. For those of you, I have not had the pleasure of meeting in person yet, I would like to say hello and I look forward to meeting you. My name is Casey Charles and I am your new school chaplain. I am so excited to be joining the amazing team here at Thangool State School. As the school chaplain I am here to provide a listening ear and a caring presence within the school. I am also here to provide social, emotional, and spiritual support to students, staff and the families within the school community. I can be found at the school on a Tuesday and Wednesday, so if you see we around please don’t hesitate to say hello.
Fun Fact: A crocodile cannot stick its tongue out.
Wellbeing Idea: Spend quality time with people you love.
Wellbeing activity: Try a scavenger hunt. One person writes up a list of household items, say around 10 or 12 things and within a time limit race around the house each collecting the items off the list.
