Term 2 Week 10 Newsletter 19 June 2024
From our Principal
Last week of term 2! Where has the past 10 weeks gone?! The first semester of the 2024 school year concludes at 3:00 pm today following a busy, challenging, rewarding, exciting, thought provoking, jam packed, illness filled, and amazing 20 weeks. Make sure you take the time to rest, enjoy quality family time, recharge the batteries as we head into another busy term and semester after the holiday break.
I would like to commend our students on their outstanding performance at the sports carnivals. What a great couple of days showcasing our students’ talents, the spirit of sportsmanship and community togetherness with many families in attendance. It was wonderful seeing the enthusiasm, participation and positive attitude of all who participated. A huge thank you to Mrs Ebony Nancarrow for her organisation and preparation of students for the events. A big thank you to Mr Boyd for the marking of our track and to our wonderful staff for all the support in ensuring a successful day. To our amazing P&C and tuckshop convenor Mel McGovern along with her helpers for catering of our days.
This week we competed at the zone athletics where our students again shined. Taking home, the overall and aggregate trophy from all schools competing. A big THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to another amazing sporting term.
Have an awesome holiday break everyone! Stay safe and we look forward to seeing you in term 3.

Attendance - Every Day Counts
School Mission Statement: Capable Learner
Our school mission statement forms the basis of all decisions made by the school. Our first question in all we do is always “what impact does this have on our students?”
Our school has developed its own Thangool State School (TSS) Capable Learner. Our capable learner works to support our mission statement looking at all aspects of what makes a student a capable learner at Thangool.
SEL News
Over the last two weeks we have been connecting with our community to invite guests to share in their area of expertise to support our students. Students have participated in activities such as yoga, fitness sessions, body image talks and team building activities. Each activity is connected to a focus in our learning. Thank you to all involved.
Yoga and Mindfulness
Students enjoyed yoga with Tennille Williams. This promoted physical health and mental clarity. These activities help students manage stress and improve concentration. It was fantastic to see how this helped calm the nervous system and to see the group develop their concentration and focus.
Physical Exercise
The exercise routines boost physical strength, coordination, and overall mood, reducing anxiety and depression. Thank you to Gabe Graham for helping our students use exercise as a healthy way to regulate emotions.
Body Image and Self-Esteem
Guest speaker Maurica Wilson presented information on body image and self-esteem, offering valuable insights and fostering positive self-acceptance among our students.
Team Building Activities
Through team-building exercises, students learn communication, cooperation, and conflict management strategies. This term we have been focusing on the concept of what we can control rather than what we can’t. In particular, students in Year 4 will be able to talk with you about blaming, shaming or claiming.
Great turn out with our Connected Families session two on ‘Friendships’
It was wonderful to see the number of parents engaging in our Connected Families workshop on Friendships. This is a big topic amongst children and it was great to see Parents wanting to learn more strategies that can help support their children.
What does the research say on families and schools working together?
When families feel valued as partners in the school, they can also learn how to support and build on schoolwide SEL practices in their homes. Research suggests that evidence-based SEL programs are more effective when they extend into young people’s home lives (Albright & Weissberg, 2010).

AEDC
Our participation in the AEDC has been completed. The AEDC is a national assessment conducted every 3 years to examine how children have developed by the time they start school. It looks at 5 areas of early childhood development: physical health and wellbeing, social competence, emotional maturity, language and cognitive skills (school-based), and communication skills and general knowledge.
The AEDC results are provided at the national, state/territory and community level.
For early childhood educators, the AEDC data can be a useful predictor of future development and learning. Alongside other data sources, the AEDC data can help educators to:
- discover how well early childhood programs are preparing children for school
- develop target resources and services to support children's and families' wellbeing.
Our school has used AEDC data for many initiatives including the development of a school-based Playgroup, reading workshops, applications for grants and transitions from Kindy to Prep.
Assessment and Reporting
Over the next few weeks, students will be finishing their units of work and completing their assessment tasks. Teachers will then be gathering evidence of student learning and marking it against the Australian achievement standards https://v9.australiancurriculum.edu.au/ and https://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/ Reporting will be completed by teachers and report cards will be emailed home on Wednesday, 19th June. If you have any questions, regarding your child’s progress, please speak to your child’s teacher.
