End of Term Wrap-Up: Social Emotional Learning Programs
As we conclude this term, we'd like to celebrate the growth and achievements of our students through their participation in various Social Emotional Learning (SEL) programs.
- Year One Kindness Program: This term, students have been learning about the positive impact kindness can have on others. A key message has been those small acts of kindness, even just a smile, can brighten someone's day and create a more caring community.
- Girls Group: This term, our girls have been focusing on navigating friendships—learning the importance of healthy communication, and conflict resolution.
- Boys Groups: Our boys groups celebrated the conclusion of their programs around making respectful choices and building confidence. They’ve developed confidence, self-awareness, and an understanding of how giving can foster stronger relationships and personal growth.
- Year 4 Program: Our Year 4 students have been working on team-building skills with an emphasis on the theme "Blame, Shame, or Claim." They’ve been exploring the importance of taking responsibility, handling mistakes with grace, and building a positive, collaborative environment.
- Year 6 Program: Our Year 6 students have been honing their organizational skills, particularly in preparation for leading school parades. They’ve learned valuable lessons about responsibility and teamwork, which will benefit them as they transition into high school.

The ‘Holiday Slide’
Maintaining your child’s reading levels over the holidays can be a challenging task, but with strategic planning and the right resources, it is entirely feasible. Research indicates that consistent reading practice is crucial for sustaining and even improving literacy skills during extended breaks from school. An effective strategy is to incorporate a routine that includes daily reading time. Reading specialist Dr. Timothy Shanahan, a renowned literacy expert, suggests,
"Encouraging children to read at least 20 minutes a day can make a significant difference in maintaining their reading fluency and comprehension skills."
Families can support this by providing a diverse selection of reading materials that cater to the child's interests, including books, magazines, and digital content. Visiting the Banana Shire Library during the holiday break or participating in their free holiday programs, may be of interest to your children.
Another approach is to integrate reading with other holiday activities. Dr. Nell K. Duke, an educational researcher, emphasises the importance of making reading a part of everyday experiences. She notes,
"Reading recipes while cooking, instructions for holiday crafts, or travel guides for family trips can turn routine activities into literacy-rich experiences."
Additionally, involving children in discussions about what they read can enhance comprehension skills and foster a love for reading. By creating a supportive and stimulating reading environment, children can maintain and even enhance their reading levels over the holidays, setting the stage for academic success upon their return to school.
